Re: Welcome to the General Discussion Board « Result #1 on Jan 1, 2008, 7:02am »
Hello, I'm brand new to this board. I'm just curious about some of the shops and such that were around cambridge in the 1960s and 70's. I was born in the sixies and I faintly recall going to a drive-in somewhere in cambridge. and having hamburgers in what I think was central square. My brother says it was a white castle and it was near mass ave and western ave right where the three streets meet. I was hoping there wear photos of some of these because all I can remember about central square as a child is that there was a cigar store on the courner that is now a bank. There was a men's clothing shop there as well. I think there was a rexall druggest in that block but then again I was just a child so I might be mixing things up.
If anyone knows of any websites for books I would really appreicate it.

My Grandfather Walter Storrow Rigby was an Architect in Cambridge and Hamilton approximately 1903-1910. He was a sometime partner with J.W. Warren and they designed the Cambridge Club in 1907 and later won a competition to design the Carnegie Library in Hamilton. If anyone has any information on Walter Rigby would love to hear from you. Walter's wife was Eliza Annie Rigby who was a school teacher. Daughters Norah Rigby was born in Cambridge 1905 (my mother) and Molly was born in 1907. Walter disappeared in 1911 never to be heard from again. Grandmother Eliza taught at Tamahere School in 1917. Many thanks katrina email: katrinawehipeihana1@hotmail.com

Thanks Susan.
No offline responses as no-one has yet seen this forum! Thanks for the link, that may get some new memebrs along I hope.
There was more discussion about this month's committee meeting though and the format may be different. We are discussing several options and as soon as something concrete is decided I'll put a notice up here.

Proposed Society Quiz Night « Result #7 on Dec 11, 2006, 5:33pm »
At the last Committee Meeting the idea was discussed of the Cambridge Historical Society having a Quiz Night for a social outing.
The quiz will run along the lines of those run in pubs, which are popular, and will include five categories of ten questions each, with a short break between categories for social interaction.
As the quiz was my idea several have suggested I set the questions, so I will set to work on this. So I'm thinking perhaps the five categories can be: - General Knowledge - Cambridge History - New Zealand History - TV and Films - Geography
Venue At this stage nothing is confirmed but committee member Michael Cole has suggested we may be able to use the Cambridge Repertory Society's Gaslight Theatre. We'll update this when it's confirmed.
Teams The idea is to form teams who compete to answer the most quiz questions correctly.
A suggestion made to me is that each team could represent a separate group from the district, such as maybe groups of four people representing the: - Cambridge Bridge Club - Cambridge Repertory Society - Waipa Council Staff - Cambridge Chamber of Commerce - Cambridge Community Board - Genealogy Group - New Zealand Historic Places Trust - Cambridge Museum - Cambridge Rotary - Cambridge Lions - Cambridge Probus - Altrusa - Senior Net - Lyceum Club - Vehicle Collectors - Cambridge RSA
The above are suggested groups but if you belong to one of those groups as well as the CHS, bring along some of the members of that other group and welcome them along to the CHS night to compete for their team.
Prizes The way it works is everyone taking part puts in a tiny fee of say $2, and at the end a pool of money from the total becomes the prize.
An alternative idea is each group brings along a small prize for the prize pool - like a cake, a meatpack, a bottle of wine or whatever, and the total prize to be won by the top group is all these small prizes in one big hamper. These are just suggestions at this stage - you can add other ideas too.
Historical Supper Another idea we've had is for the supper, everyone brings a plate of food, but the food has to have a historical twist.
Bake some goodies from your mother's or grandmother's recipe book. Or an old magazine from the wartime period, or whatever. Many old recipes can be found in things like the Edmond's cookbook, Aunt Daisy's books, or the internet. I have some 1943 war economy recipes from the NZ Women's Weekly too if anyone wants to try them.
What-Is-It Quiz A further suggestion for the evening is members can bring along historical items and see if others present can guess what the item is, what it did and any other history about it.
Can You Help? If you have any other suggestions, or you'd like to volunteer to help arrange this event, please contact me or post your ideas, suggestions and thoughts here.

Soldiers' Service - 14th of December 2006 « Result #9 on Dec 4, 2006, 10:56am »
The Cambridge Historical Society's special 'Year of the Veteran' project will recognise four Returned Soldiers who are buried in the Leamington Cemetary but have no headstones.
They are: Fred Keeley (died 1950) Gerald Murtagh (died 1951) Donald James McKinnon (died 1952) Robert William Higgins (died 1956)
Some new headstones have been provided by the Department of Internal Affairs to mark their gravesites, and Waipa District Council is to set them in place.
On Thursday the 14th of December 2006, at 2.00pm, a service will be held in the old part of the Leamington Cemetery to mark this occasion. Families of the deceased have been contacted.
Reverend Geoff Crawshaw will bless the new headstones, and the RSA will be present with a bugler and poppies.
Please come and show these returned soldiers that they have not been forgotten.
